starter 300 utility

I bought a 300 utility that had a bad starter on it .I had the starter rebuilt and put it back on tractor and it makes a terrible grinding noise. has anyone had any problems with these starters making a terrible noise thanks in advance lee

Take it back to the rebuilder. There is a new starter drive type with a cushion and clutch. it works well. Jim

With the starter removed how does the ring gear look?

Also, if the shop put the starter back together correctly. There are shim washers that adjust the front to back thrust of the armeture and bendix drive position. I have mine so when you look at the brushes the comutator is completely contacted. The other thing is the whole armature should just wiggle a tiny bit front and back. The new style bendix makes a real differance. Make sure you tell them it has been converted 6 to 12 if you now have it converted.
