Starter - 6V or 12V, make a difference???

I am trying to buy a new starter for my 800 Ford tractor.

Have had the tractor for about 15 years or so. Was 6 volt but converted it to 12 volt by changing the
standard things, but was told I could leave the original starter. Has been working fine for years but
stop working. I opened it up and determined that I need a new one. It is a mess.

Buy most of my tractor stuff thru e-bay. Have found original 6V starters at reasonable prices.

Question, does the starter care if it is a 6V or 12V battery turning it??????

A 6V starter motor will survive repeated operation with a 12V battery unless it is abused by extended cranking periods.

That said, operation of a 6V starter with a 12V battery is hard on starter drives and ring gears.

many of us would say it doesn't matter, as we have been running 6 volt chargers in 12 volt tractors for years - myself included. others disagree.

but why not just have yours rebuilt instead of buying another one?

If you are buying new, it doesn't make sense not to get a 12 volt.
