starter bendix

trying to install the starter on my 52 8n,The bendix is extended, came out that way, removed the starter for engine rebuild,I have tried the bench grinder ,wire wheel and I had this thing spinning fast enough to fly with no results, tried to install it the way it was, impossible, the hole is enlongated, any help would be appreciated and may save this starters life.lol The starter worked fine before so no issues with that and it does have the big spring on it

I feel your pain. The starter install was and is the most frustrating thing to work on on these tractors. I know some here have done it hundreds of times and can do it in their sleep. For me, it took several 10-15 minutes trials, failing to get it just right and coming back for more..., then finally after growling at it pretty bad, it just slipped in. Only advice from me is just keep wiggling and growling.

I had to remove the starter once to paint behind it.When I replaced it,I must have been holding my mouth right, because it went right in.I had never heard anyone tell me it was difficult,so in my ignorance,I did'nt know it was supposed to be hard to do.I have gotten a-hold of some in cars that seemed impossible, then all of a sudden,it plopped in,go figure.---lha

" I had this thing spinning fast enough to fly with no results"

Spin it the other way.

The bendix has to spin in the same direction as the engine spins in order to retract.

But, as others have said.....it will go in, even w/o that .44!

Loosen the two bolts holding the oil filter canister to the block, (it does not need to be removed) remove the dipstick, keep it close to the block while pulling the front of it up and pushing the bendix back into the hole. Sometimes you have to remove the drain petcock as well.

As I am just puting this back ,the oil filter and drain cock are already removed, I can get it in the block like it is but it will not go back towards the block enough for the bolts to line up,I don't understand how I can spin it he other way? it only rachets one way, sorry ,I'll try again. thanks Bruce

O.K. tried something different but it worked,I took the drive off and put it on a piece of round stock and tried to spin it and by gollie,it worked, starter back on just like it belonged there, lol I still think it knew it's life was in danger, thanks to all you guys for the help, especially Bruce, you have helped me before and probably won't be the last.I love this forum.

Hi Mike I am in the same fix here. I have a strter off and am ready to put it back on. Would you spell out the way you removed the bendix and reinstalled and the spinning procedure you used to get it pulled back in. I have not tried to put the strter back on yet but no harm in knowing the trick ahead of time I guess. Use EMAIL if you would rather and I will print the instructions. Thanks Devious

I guess I'm a little dense but is the bendix supposed to be all the way in or all the way out. Mine is in and there is about an inch and a half of the starter gear exposed. I can get the starter reinstalled but it won't spin. I can spin it on the bench. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well before I would even guess an answer I would suggest you start a new thread and supply all the information you can,you will receive a lot more info that way.,Mike

I would also love to have you describe how you mounted it on a piece of round stock and spun it. I have tried spinning it with mounted wire wheel, wire wheels mounted on drills, etc. and just gave up.
