MY STARTER BUTTON STOPPED WORKING SO I CHANGED MY SOLONIOD.STILL NO RESPONSE,DEAD,NOTHING.I TOOK A WIRE TOUCHED THE POWER POST AND SOLINOID POST AND IT TURNED OVER. I'M CONFUSED. IS THEIR A POWER SOURCE TO THE STARTER BUTTON?I CAN'NT FIND IT!

THANKS,JOE

Please turn off the cap locks. It is very hard to read.

When you ask a question here, it’s usually a good idea to tell us:

1. The model of your tractor (2N, 9N, 8N, NAA, etc).

2. If it is 6v or 12v.

3. If it’s an N, if the distributor is on the front or side of the engine.

4. If it has any major parts that are not OEM, such as electronic ignition, a side coil on a front distributor, etc.

Troubleshooting is different depending on the model of the tractor, voltage, ignition system & distributor placement.

If it's an OEM N, meaning positive ground, the solenoid should engage when the wire attached to the starter button is grounded.

Caps off.
The tractor is 8 N ,converted to 12 V 15 years ago, distributor is front mounted and negative ground.

If you have a solenoid then it works by grounding the little terminal on it.
Try jumping to ground the terminal that goes to the starter button. The power comes from the terminal on the solenoid that is connected to the battery hot post.

Joe........surprizingly enuff, the starter solenoid don't care, 6-or-12v, positive or negative ground. It gitts its power internally from the battery HOT terminal. It is operated by GROUNDING the little middle terminal thru the BIG thumb switch by the tranny shifter. The 3-terminal starter solenoid is mounted ontop of the starter with the little middle terminal facing the engine where it is hard to gitt too. Iff'n you mount it facing out, guess what??? it will never work. The BIG thumb switch is pert-neer bullet proof but the operating wire to the switch occasionally gitts kicked OPEN. A clever shadetree mechanic will use a screwdriver blade to short the little middle wire terminals to ground to operate the solenoid....TRANNY in NEUTRAL. Now go out and check yer wiring. ......Dell

Sounds to me like a bad wire connection from button to solenoid, bad ground and/or bad solenoid.
And, you can get brand new parts that do not work.

Thanks for the advise ,here is what I've done so far.
Grounding the wire from the starter button.didn't work.Checked with a test light to see if power was going thru the system and it was.Used a meter to see if the starter switch had conductivity,it did.
I replaced the wire from starter button to syliniod,no difference.
Question, the small post going to the button, should there be power on it before the button is pressed?
JOE

Yes.

You need to be SURE you have the correct solenoid AND have the proper terminal stud connected to the battery cable.

" SO I CHANGED MY SOLONIOD."

" You need to be SURE you have the correct solenoid AND have the proper terminal stud connected to the battery cable.

I think this is the answer.

You got the wrong solenoid. Or got the battery wire on the wrong terminal.

A 12v Ford car solenoid is not going to work on an N!

So if I understand this when I turn the key on there should be power on the small terminal leading to the starter button?
Now there is none.
JOE

no no no

there should ALWAYS be battery power to one side of the solenoid.. the other big side connects tot he starter. then there is the lil stud going to the thumb switch. there is a coil inside the solenoid. one side hits the battery side of the solenoid for power.. the other side hits the lil stud that wants to be grounded by the thumb switch.

I understand the little stud faces the block, right side is power and left is grounded to the starter. Still when will power go to the little stud? When the thumg starter is pushed?Does the little stud need power?

JOE

The first seleniod I tried looked like your diagram. The one on the starter the power came in on the right not the left.
I returned it because it said 6 v not 12v,but I did try it according to your diagram b-4 I returned it and when I pressed the button it clicked but didn't turn the starter.

if you would use your meter or test lamp, there is power on that little stud ANY TIME the battery wire is hooked to the bat side of the solenoid. pressing the thumb button merely applies a ground to the open coil circuit inside the solenoid.

Joe.......the 2-wire ignition switch has 'nuttin' to do with the 3-terminal starter solenoid. The little middle terminal is ALWAYS electrically HOT from INSIDE the solenoid. The RIGHT BATTERY STUD supplies the electrical power to run the solenoid when you GROUND the little middle stud by the BIG starter thumb switch by the tranny shifter. Understand??? ......respectfully, Dell

Hope This Helps, so far the whole deal is confusing to me. I know the 'pros' have told you how to wire the solenoid and such, but, as an afterthought, are you sure the 'thumb' button is actually making correct contact with the whatchamacallit ?

Yes I put a conductive test on the thumb button and when pressed there is a connection.I have no power to the small terminal,I think thats my problem.
