Starter Engage Flywheel

Ford 4000su. Just swapped a SOS transmission with a 8x2 manual. Took my diesel SOS and swapped diesel engine to a donor gas 8x2. Changed the flywheel with one I got at a salvage yard (pn C5NE6375AE) and put a new clutch in too. Tractor back in on piece but the starter will not turn the motor over. Starter is fine on the bench and even tried another starter. Sounds like a loud click/tap when key is switched but not spinning motor. Motor spins 360 easily barring it over.

I know that the ring gear is different , but the flywheel itself should work if you swap out the ring gear. So the donor flywheel is from a tractor with a diesel engine and an 8x2 transmission? What specific model tractor was it from?

Both tractors are 4000su models. Original diesel with SOS and a gas with 8x2. The gas flywheel has a 162T ring gear and a 6 mounting holes for a the pressure plate. The flywheel I used has the 8 mounting holes for the pressure plate and unfortunately I didnt count the teeth before I put tractor back together. The flywheel was to be from a 4000su diesel.

I ran into that problem on a Ford 531, I went from a gas engine to a diesel engine and kept the gas ring gear then tried to use the diesel starter. That didn’t work and I ended up splitting the tractor again and putting on a new diesel ring gear after the gas stater went out. I got 2 years before the split
