Starter for 53 Super H

Smoke rolled out of the starter on my 53 Super H. The tractor was converted to 12 volt before I bought it so I don?t know if the starter was a 6 or 12 volt. Anyway, can the starter be rebuilt? If it can?t, can I find a 12 volt starter for it?

Rebuild is sure an option. If no local source, sending it out is fine. The rebuilt one is probably better than a reproduction. It should be rebuilt with a new clutch drive not the big flat wound spring type. Jim

I won't go so far as to say that there is no such thing as a 12V starter for these tractors, but nearly all conversions retain the 6V starter. That's the whole point of the conversion: 6V doesn't turn the starter fast enough. 12V turns the starter faster.

Most likely the starter failed because it's old, not because of 12V. The 12V may have accelerated the failure, but it was already in a failure mode when the tractor was converted.

A good starter will last a good long time on a tractor that starts easily. If you have to grind on the starter for more than a few seconds, you need to tune the tractor up so it starts easier.

Fix what you have, IF you can find a good automotive electrical shop and the windings aren't burned. They're getting hard to find. Most "repair" shops simply sell you a "remanufactured" part and collect the core for return to the remanufacturing facility.

Just FYI, my brother tuned up my H, which has had a 6V starter and 12V conversion for 30 years now, and when I push the starter button it turns one turn and immediately FIRES up! VROOoommm. I think that's how they are supposed to work.

Knowledgible people have said the current conducting parts of a 6V starter are heavier than similar parts of a 12V starter, too carry more amps.

Had the 6V starter on my 12 V Super H rebuilt 2-3 years ago. First time I started the tractor it scared me it spun the engine so fast.

Hardest thing on a starter is to hold the switch while the starter cranks the engine over one cylinder at a time. The switch, wiring, commutator, brushes, windings all get really hot.

If you have a 2 bolt mount starter with a saddle switch search number 1108016 for rebuilt options. If you have a 3 bolt mount starter search 1108112. This site shows that one, but not very many 53 model SH used it. Can have yours repaired or some 12 volt starter housings and armature can be made to mount on the 2 bolt starter nose. If you want original a contact stud would need installed for the saddle switch and holes drilled to mount it on some. Usually not worried about original if I switch one I use a magnetic switch and a push button.

That big fat clutch drive lasted about 5 starts for dad. Went back to the old spring and works fine now. Not impressed with the clutch style. It broke the splined sleeve going over the shaft and the whole drive.
