starter housing broke

I went to start my to20,. I heard a loud bang and the starter would not turn. I removed the starter and the housing that holds the bindex and the front bearing was broker off. any ideas why that happened. thanks

Will engine turn with screwdriver on flywheel? I've seen this happen when engine lock's up. Hope not.

check to make sure your bendix return spring isnt broke, I went thru 3 starter housings a few years back, before I figured out what caused it. It slams the starter drive so hard into the housing it breaks it.
