Starter ID confusion

I need to replace the complete starter on my Farmall 686 diesel with the D-310 engine. The starter that I have taken off is a Delco Remy 1107871. Clearly marked on the case. The old starter has worked OK until it wore out. But I want to be certain to purchase the correct starter. When I search online for a replacement starter 1107871 is always called a John Deere starter. !! I am not sure what you get if you mix red and green!! So I am looking for information about which starter is the correct fit. Where can I look to find the correct starter model number?

When a rebuilder assembles a starter bits and pieces from other applications that fit sometimes get tossed together.

They used to grind off the old part numbers an put a nice new metal rebuilder's tag on them the the new/correct part number for the assembly.

In later years, they just stick a paper label on that becomes missing over time and leave not applicable old stamped part numbers to confuse someone years later.

I think the original Delco numbers for your tractor would have been 1109252 or possibly 1998368.

When you get a new starter be SURE the "drive" tooth count is the same as your old one and also the tooth pitch and gear diameter.

STRANGE things happen sometimes with those details on rebuilt starters that are "supposed to" fit.

I would recommend holding onto your original starter until you are assured that the replacement will work. It has been
discussed on here that there are slight differences in the centering or offset of the starter nose pieces. Have heard of people have all kinds of trouble with the starter not engaging properly or lasting after replacing the starter on their 656, 666 and 686. If it were mine I would just rebuild the original one. In my opinion you will then have a better starter then a thrown together rebuilt unit.

I forgot to mention that my existing starter appears to be a reman. There is an illegible paper label and the original metal tag is missing. So what wore out has described appears to be my situation. Can anyone confirm the original Delco numbers that wore out mentioned?

I have found myself in the position where I had to use the head from the original starter to make it right.

We'll see what happens. I have ordered a re-man starter from the local NAPA guy. I will keep yo posted when I install it.
