Starter is grinding

Hi All,
Having a starter issue, she takes 2-3 or 4 time on the start button before the starter will fully engage and spin the engine. I cleaned up the bendix drive as well as could be done. Left some light oil on there, didnt help.

That bendix is replaceable right? Starter seems ok just doesnt engage. If you have starter parts let me know.

Thanks,
Bill

What sort of machine do you have, and what type of starter? If it's a true Bendix drive it should be easily replaceable. Parts availability is another question. What does the ring gear look like? Worn teeth can cause that syptom, so can a weak battery and/or poor or undersize cables or just corroded connections.

Look at the ring gear on the flywheel and make sure the teeth are good where the starter is hitting it. Most engines when shut down stop close to the same area so that area gets hammered more then any other area of the ring gear and the teeth suffer from that

The start seemed ok before I split the tractor to put in a clutch. I didnt see shims so I put none back in. I thought maybe there should have been. The flywheel was ok as far as I remember but I have pics so I'll go back and look at those.

Thanks folks!

Bill
