Starter keeps running

I have 52 8n and a few days ago it quit starting. I replaced the solenoid and now it starts as soon as I turn the key to on, before I push the start button.,. it wont disengage. it has a 12 volt conversion on it with the 4 post solenoid.I tried taking off the push button wire but that didnt help.battier is full charge.

You installed the wrong solenoid for the "creative" ignition switch-must-be-on-then-push-starter-button conversion setup you apparently have.

Here's the solenoid you need:

NAPA or other stores can cross the Standard Igntion # to their brand, if needed.

The soleniod does not get it power from the ignition switch. It gets it from the cable from the battery, and when you depress the thumb switch you provide a ground which will ativate the solenod. You should be able to crank the engine over with the ignition switch offd.You need a three post solonoid made for the tractor. Not an automotive type.

Did you miss the point that he has a setup where the coil of the solenoid DOES get power from the ignition switch (which is NOT a bad idea) as it can't be cranked by kids or "blems" if the key has been removed.

I showed him how to make it work (including a part #) with the setup he has.

The 12 Volt setup is not original, either, but it is and improvement and WORKS, just as the isolated base starter solenoid works and is an improvement in safety.

All I was trying to point out waas that It was not that way orginially. I agree with what you said and see why you said it. Just thought I would point out how it was orginially. I like to be able to crank it over with out the key on myself. If you don't leave the key in then kids will not be able to start it even if they can crank it over. IMHO

My mistake , The key is a aux. key that is a after market to interrupt the power threw the positive cable . So as soon as it is turned electric is sent to everything. and the tractor starter starts turning.

In that case, likely you have a defective new solenoid from "the land of almost right".

Looks like new information has surfaced and my ASSUMPTIONS were WRONG! (AGAIN!)

I STILL like the idea of not being able to crank it without the key, though!

Thanks to all who wrote me! I ended up replacing the 4 wire with the OE 3 wire solenoid .It works great!

You still have to have the Aux key to get it to crank it. It splits the positive cable so juice flows with out it on.
