Starter MF 65

Starter on my new-old 65 gas stopped churning. It was totally dead, nothing happened when hit by current. I took it in to be rebuilt and the guy had a problem finding parts that fit. He seemed to think it had been modified inside?

This is a 12 volt tractor.

Questions.

Will a starter from a 35 or a 50 fit this tractor?

Were all 65's 12 volt when new?

Found a new 6 volt starter on CL, but don't think it will last with a 12v system.

Looks like a rebuild will be almost $200, but new ones are about $230. Are the new ones any good or just junk copies?

The 6 volt starter will work fine on 12 volts as long as you don't over do it when cranking it. If the tractor starts right up with a few turns it will be ok. Go to the AGCO Online Parts Books and compare starter numbers for the other models.

Just a few weeks ago I tore appart the 65's starter, and a starter from a 50, made one of the two, then bought some parts and got the other pieces working aswell, so obviously interchangable, but- if the fellow thinks someone fooled around in there....
