Starter Motor on Case VA

I have restored a 1947 Case VA tractor.The Starter motor is a restored 6V Autolite (MZ 4114 8B)
I am having problems in that the start is 'slow'
ie it is slow at turning the motor over and the new 6V battery has to be fully charged to turn the motor.
Has anyone else had these problems?
I have read in other forums that the Bosch is a better starter than Autolite but I do not know if a Bosch will fit
Is there a 12V starter which will fit this Case VA?

The 6V starter will live a long time when used with 12V and make the tractor start "right now"!
Make sure the brushes and bushings are good.
As with any starter, do not grind on it continuously for more than a minute. Generally, if they haven't started by then, they ain't agonna. (Gas engines)

It will work fine on 12V with the 6 volt starter. The engine will be running before the starter could possibly warm up if all is well otherwise. Just use it. mEl

I have 2 Autolite starters for my VAC. Both have been overhauled...One cranks it like it had a 12 volt system...the other barely turns it over. The generator shop has looked at the slow one 2 times since he overhauled it and cannot explain why it goes so slowly.

I would bet you have a problem with the starter but have seen cheap aftermarket 12v cables cause the same condition on a 6v system. The original 6v cables were heavy, I used welding cable on one of my 6v VACs. Going to a 12v battery and alternator will work as stated by someone else, but I like to stay original, just my preference.
good luck

I got my cables at place that works on big trucks they are the same size as the original and work great.

PS nnalert.com has rebuilt starters for around $100 I got one for SI and it worked great.

I have welding cable to be very ineffective as battery/starter cable, not really sure why but can run brand new 2/0 welding cable and ends and they wont crank for crap, switch over to new 1/0 battery cable and will about upset the tractor, do a voltage drop test on the whole system, not what the battery drops to but what each leg of the circuit is losing, if you need help as to how to do that PM me!
