Starter motor

I got my starter motor remounted in the block today and noticed that the shaft would move back & forth about 3/8" but spins freely and smoothly. Do I have a problem I should check out before I light 'er up?

Sawatch 8N,Are you talking armature end play,or armature side play? Ether one is too much.If its side play your starter needs new bushings.If its armature end play it needs to be shimmed on the armature shaft ends to take out the slack,but that seems like a awful lot of end play with out the end cap or something bent.Ed play should be no more than about .010 - .015

i agree.. that much end play could cause engagement issues. and side play will cause binding..

Thx guys, that's what I was thinking that the endplay movement would cause engagement problems.
Appreciate the help/info.

3/8 Side play.Ive just had a pint and know that wont work.
