Starter or Engine Problem

This is a follow up to a previous post about my 1950 8n that would not turn over more that a 1/2 turn. I followed the advice given in that post about possible clutch/flywheel problems and those were not the solution. I was able to get the engine to turn over normally when I removed all of the spark plugs. If only one is installed the engine will stop turning when that cylinder is at the top. I remove the exhaust manifold and inspection panels to look at the valve spring area. I did not find any probems with these.

I this I either have a very weak starter or a major engine problem but am not sure what to do next?

sounds (to me) like a weak starter, batt connection or bad battery.

Strangely enough is sounds like long reach spark plugs and the pistons coming up against them.

If the piston was coming up and hitting the spark plug, wouldn't the gap be pressed flat and gone?

Ekheerdt,What type and number spark plugs do you have in it?Autolite 437s is the recommended plug for an 8N. The wrong plugs with a long reach could maybe hit a valve, I'm not sure,I know you can see the valve down the plug hole.If so and you hit it hard it could have bent some valves(more problems)I hope not for you.

Caryc,The piston can not hit the spark plug on a N engine.

If you can turn it over by hand it is a starter, battery or cable problem.

I was able to jump start the tractor using a 12 volt battery. Not sure if this means the starter is weak or a battery problem. Is there anyway to test both?

Most any auto parts store can load test a battery and as for the starter they can also test them to see if the amp draw etc is as it should be

Sorry for the long reach plug suggestion but EK didn't ever give any indication that he was using the starter to "crank" it over, either in his first post about his new clutch or this one . . . so I thought he was rolling the engine over manually.

Start with the basics. Remove the battery and have it tested. We can then go from there.

Voltage readings would be a good place to start...
