Starter positive cable stud

Hi, I have a Ford 960 1955. The copper stud on the starter where the positive cable attaches is stripped. What is the cheapest way to replace this?

A shop that repairs starters should have the stud and insulators around it as well as the proper soldering tools to replace it. It will likely cost you more to get the parts and tools, plus the learning curve of doing it.

There used to be some adapters that would screw down on the stripped threads and provide new theards to attach the cable, but those are just a patch and might not hold over time. the picture is an example on Amazon they are available in 5/16" 18 TPI or 24 TPI

Cheap, you want cheap. Back off the nut you have and install a coupling nut. 2$ at Hardware store should cover it Attach cable via bolt into coupling nut. That is the cheapest I got.

If you feel adventurous YT does sell a rebuild kit with a new starter lug. Not for the feint of heart. It does require soldering and due to the insulator around the stud the soldering needs to take place with the coil removed from the housing. Then there is paper insulation on the coil that does not like high heat either. I was fully prepared to replace the starter when I decided to try a rebuild. I was successful but keeping my fingers crossed every time I start the tractor.

Our host has the Starter Post Kit, not particularly expensive but the shipping will get you. Might be worth a look for the picture and part numbers however.

This won't be cheaper but you might have one in inventory. Split bolt connector might grip better but will cost more than a hose clamp.

Adding a second nut to grab the good threads further out... will work.. but remember that copper studs are soft and strip easily.

This might work if it is stripped because he over tightened it.
If it is stripped because he crossed threaded it this will not work.

I have been able to find a few on epay, if you have a few threads left they work pretty well
