Starter problem... NEED HELP

My starter broke so I took it off to have it rebuilt. However, the large spring and one of the washers that holds the spring on were not on the drive. I don't want to put the rebuilt starter on if those parts are in the tractor. How can I get these out without breaking apart the tractor??? Can I drain the transmission and go though the drain plug??? Any help would be nice. Thanks

Found mine in the void under the flywheel...

Might not bother a thing but if it were mine I would go thru the starter hole with an earth magnet on that telescopes and try to fish it out. Might work but have never done it. Those magnets will pick up a claw hammer so should be strong enough to pull the spring out if you can locate it. I know some people have left them with out problems .

Why is there a cotter-pin in the bottom of these??? I have one on mine and it looks to be there in your picture.

There is plenty of room in the bell housing for it; I'd just let it be. Short of fishing it out, the only other way to get to it is to split the tractor.

Yes.. you -could- drain the tranny and go in thru the drain plug.. but all you would get is dirty ahnds after a couple frustrating hours cuz the transmission cavity and the clutch bellhousing cavity are SEPERATE.

If it really bothers you, get a coathanger and magnet and fish around in there till you find something.

You might want to invest in a set of manuals for your machine as well.. A quick look at an exploded parts diagram will show the 2 cavities in question...
