Starter problem

9N front mount. Recently put plugs, plug wires and points in. Reassembled all wiring and tried to start about 4 or 5 times. Wouldn"t start. Now starter will not engage when button depressed. Charged 6V battery. No engagement. Tried 12V direct jump to starter lug. Nothing. Put in gear and rocked back and forth (can"t rock too much as mounted on dollies), then tried 12V direct jump again. Just get periodic spark at lug but no movement. What do I need to do now?

You jumping direct to the starter. If yes then good chance your starter is in need of replacement or rebuilt. Or you have lost ground at the starter where it mounts

As a first and inexpensive step, loosen the two bolts that hold the starter to the chassis. Back them out about an inch. Then with a wire brush and sand paper, clean both the chassis mating surface and the starter mating surface. This surface provides the ground connection. You can add a little dielectric grease to this surface if you like. Then tighten the bolts. This may improve the ground connection.

Thanks Old. If I remove starter, is it safe to direct jump to verify starter works properly (i.e., "bench test")? Any hints on removing starter?

Thanks Colin. Great suggestion. Out to Morton Bldg. to stoke fire and take your advice. Will post back if I can get to turn over. Then will have to figure out why it didn't start in the first place.

The big problem with the N series starter is that the bolts to hold it on also hold the starter together. So you need to loose both bolts then slide the starter back just a little bit and put a 5/16 nut on one of the bolts so it does not fall apart in your hands. Once off I would take it to an auto parts store and have them bench test it since they have machines that can say if it is good or bad or drawing to many amps etc. Cost to do that in most places is your time and gas to take it there

Cleaned up ground point and remounted. Jumped with 12V again and nothing, so going to remove starter and take it in. Do I need to remove drain cock in block to remove? Seemed like when I had the bolts loose and pulled back starter would not completely dismount.

Depending on what may or may have been done in the past yes you may have to remove that if it sticks out very far and also maybe the oil filter canister. On many the drain plug is just a simple short pipe plug but on others they have been replaced with something that sticks out and causes a problem like your talking about
