Starter Problem

When I push the starter button nothing happens. I put jumper cabels on both sides of the relay on top of the starter and it turned over very slowly. I checked to make sure all the wires were tight and no corosion. So whats my problem. Thanks for any help

Greg, Maybe I'm way off ... but how old is that battery? Have you tried a new battery or tried jumping it?

If you have an original 6volt system, you can still safely jump from a 12 volt system by connecting directly to the starter, and grounding to a lug on the rear wheel. [b:654c4848f0]Make sure you are in neutral if you do this!!![/b:654c4848f0]

Maybe I didn't understand correctly......but it sounds to me like you jumped it wrong. Check out tip # 43, below. Do it that way; if the bendix doesn't engage & the starter does not turn, you most likely have a bad ground between the starter & the block, the bendix is jammed to the ring gear, or a bad starter/bendix. Check back & you will get plenty of help.

If you used "ONE" jumper cable from side to side of the solenoid, I would suspect you have a puny #8 jumper cable that is loosing voltage big time. I assume you are have a 6 volt system and a 1 or 2 volt loss is going to slow the starter down considerably.
So what's your problem? - ground the small terminal of your solenoid. If solenoid now works you have a bad starter switch. If not probably a bad solenoid.

I jumped the starter they way you told me. If the starter turns over, does that mean I have a bad cylnoid.

That last blast of cold weather was great. Guys are already booking Ice fishing trips. About two months earlier that normal.

If you ground the small 3rd terminal and the starter doesn't engage.. but starter does turn when you jump around the solenoid, or when you jump from a donor battery to the starter directly.. then yeah.. sounds like a bad solenoid.

Do get an OEM style 3 terminal solenoid and install it in the correct direction. don't let any parts counter idiot sell you an automotive 4 post solenoid.. there are 2 types and one won't work. the other can be made to work with extra wireing..
