my starter seems to drag and makes a lot of noise. does this look correct? and as soon as I remember how to insert the picture it will help

If you email me the picture, I'll post it for you.
Obviously your starter shouldn't drag or make too much noise.
Dragging sounds can be caused by bad connections though.
Is this a newly acquired tractor or a recent development on one you've owned?

since I posted I did some checking. I took the starter off and tested it off of the tractor. the starter barely spins. a more important finding was the bushing at the drive side was fractured. it was also out of position. I will send the email to you. Thanks. I think at this point I might have to buy another starter.

If yours is an original starter, I would lean towards having it
rebuilt as opposed to buying a replacement. Granted, it may be
more time and the cost may be a wash, but the quality is better.

Now I'm cooking with gas. so the bushing is cracked. I took the starter apart and drove the bushing back in where it should be. put the starter back together and it will spin but very slowly. I will admit I was using a battery charger to power it so that probably had some effect. however the starter shaft is loose due to the bushing damage and the end plate has fractures where the bushing goes in.

the starter is a rebuilt that I purchased earlier this year. the tractor is a 50 8N side distributor 12 vt. the starter has been acting up for a few months but I decided to work it until it broke. so here I am.

my original question was about the drive. it looks like it is extended and will not turn at all it seems locked up. I figure that might be why the bushing and plate are damaged..

The drive locks in the extended position until the engine
over-speeds the starter to spin it back in. It may be fine.
Some guys have had luck spinning them with a wire brush on
a bench grinder to get them to retract. I've not had such luck.
I have simply re-installed them and let the engine do it.
Mine didn't have cracked housings though.

I took it apart and forced the bushing back in its place. I didn't have a bushing so i could not replace at this time.

Thanks for the advice. when it stops raining I will test it that way. regardless I have to perform repair or replace
