Starter questions

I have a Farmall C serial #31047 that was converted to 12 volt many years ago. The starter has recently failed
My old starter, photo below, had the brass nub under the starter switch sloped in the opposite direction from the starter that I recently bought. Therefore the switch will not work when installed backwards. Can I use the starter that I just bought , but have to get a different starter switch?, or did I indeed order the wrong starter and now need to order a correct one? The starter that I bought is a 6 volt, my mistake? Do I need to get a 12 volt? The old starter was a delco-remy model 1107067...does anyone know if this was a 12 volt or 6 volt?
I thank you in advance for any ways that you can help me with this.

Appears you got one of the goofs done now days with starter rebuilds. Likely to be correct but who ever rebuilt it installed the start button nub backwards

Somebody installed the copper stud 180º off.

Send it back and HOPE the next one is correct.

since the starter needs to go back , i would get a 12 volt starter. God help is hard to find u know , lol.

Hmmm? Soldered in backwards, copper stud 180° off? I have 2 old parts starters with the copper stud installed that way. And can I for sure not purchase a 12 volt starter for a C? I've seen some indicating that they have 12v for a super C, would they not work with a C?

Yup, have had it rebuilt twice over the last 30 years by someone who is close. He is no longer in business. The nearest now is over 2 hour drive one way. So I'm thinking time for a new starter. May still go for the 4 hours of driving yet though. Thanks all for your inputs.

The starter on my Super C went bad and the repair shop converted it to a 12 volt starter as part of the repair since my tractor has been converted to 12 volts. Works real nice and didn't cost more than buying a replacement which my starter guy said they are cheap enough he wouldn't even work on them when they eventually quit.

Good to know. My starter may have been converted to 12 volt as well when the shop converted the tractor to 12 volt. I don't remember, it was over thirty years ago, that shop is closed now, and I wasn't the main tractor caretaker then. May be a silly question, but how would I tell if my old starter is 12 volt or 6 volt? The nearest repair shop is over two hours away and I don't travel much. Sad but true repacement parts are never as good as the old originals. Thankyou for the information.

The 12 volt starter doesn't slam the ring gear like a 6 volt starter on 12 volts does. It also doesn't turn the engine a 100 miles per hour. Other than that I don't know how to tell the difference.

If you just use a smaller cable from the switch to the battery it will ease that harsh engagement to the ring gear and still turn the engine.
My dad wanted to argue about it not getting enough juice to turn it over. I said lets try it and since it worked and was softer to the ring gear he got crickets about it. And since you are not running the starter for long periods it does not get hot from less cable size like it would with a long run time. Have had the smaller cable on ours for a few years now.

The delco part number on the tag will tell you what you have. No tag, no way to tell by looking at it. Odds are overwhelmingly in favor of it being a standard stock 6V starter.

Delco 1107067 is a 6V starter per google.

Now your replacement starter... have you tried it? If it works who cares which way the pad is angled? To me, it appears that the new starter is CORRECT. The angle better matches the angle from the "pad" in the switch.

Okay. So the part number on the tag identifys the starter as 6 volt. A past post indicated that their 6volt starter had been converted to a 12volt. Can this be done internally and then the old tag would no longer be correct? I have not tried the new starter. I'm reluctant to do so thinking that I might not be able to return it.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Well, tried that with various old starter parts. Not hugely knowledgeable though and gave up after no great success, only thinking that it needed a new amateur. So bought a new starter, seems now that wasn't the best choice.

Where do you buy a 12 volt starter for an H? I know most people will say the 6 volt starter will be fine on 12 volts. I know of an H where that is not true. The 6 volt starter has failed within one year from the 6 V to 12 V conversion .

If you can rig up a push instead of pull rod it will work with the right switch on it. It will work like on a B.

A properly tuned up 6 volt engine does not need 12 bolts to start it. 12 bolts on a 6 bolt starter turns that engine over way too fast. , which is totally not necessary. . I know it’s an excuse to not buy a 6 volt battery and the generator don’t work. But that’s just the way it is , as nobody can keep a simple system working. Like the doctor used to say sure I can give pills for this problem but it can create another problem. And that the truth.
