Starter ring gear removal...MAP gas??

Stupid question... i am in need of replacing the starter ring gear on the flywheel of my 8N. I dont have an acetylene torch here, so i was curious...has anyone tried MAP gas for this? any luck? just wondering if it was worth a try. thanks in advance.

Nope, haven't tried it on a ring gear.
My experience with MAP gas tells me it's not quite as hot as
acetylene but it will still get a lot of work done.
Better than propane by far, but pricey.
I welded a boat carrier over my pickup topper with it in '89.

So I guess my question would be what size tank do you have
and what size tip do you have it hooked to?
The Coleman sized tanks that come with a brazing tip, like the
one I built that boat carrier with, are not going to get the job done.

Thats the one im referring to is the small coleman propane-sized bottle. Wasnt thinking it would quite do it but hadnt tried much with Map as of yet. Do like it for the things i have tried, but didnt know what the limits on the small ones would be...

snarfblat........would you believe you DRILL it off??? Seriously. Just use a 1/4" drill bit and come in from the side. Read yer I&T FO-4. Simple, eh? .......the amazed Dell

You need HEAT to install the NEW ring gear, not to take the old one off,

Drill it or chisel it as another poster has said, or just simply smack it a couple of times with a 2 lb hammer to stretch and expand it enough to help with removal.

It ain't rocket surgery!

I have knocked them off with a hammer and punch. Seems you could just put the new one in the oven at 400-500 degrees and quickly remove and put on flywheel.

Yes, heat it in the oven.

i just put one on mine and mapp wont even come close , i tryed the oven ar 500 for an hour and that didnt do it either . i built a fire in my meat smoker with charcoal and oak wood and put a blower on it and raise the temp to about 1000 degrees put the ring gear in for about 35 to 40 minutes and it dropped right on . have everthing ready , you wont have much time .

I tried unsuccessfully to install a ring gear using MAP gas. Sent it to my dads shop with a rosebud torch. Perhaps it could be done, but after 15 minutes of applying heat with the MAP gas, I was ready for plan B.

Local machine shop charged me $20 to do it. I would give them a call.

Something else that may be worth a try. Put the flywheel in the freezer overnight. Put the gear in the oven at 500 degrees for an hour. Be quick when you assembly.

I would call the machine shop first.

edit: I just talked to my machine shop guy. He said they do it at ~900 degrees F, so 500 in the oven is not hot enough

Well now we have a first hand experience opinion.
Steel starts to glow at what, 800 F?
I would think it needs to be pretty darn hot.
