Starter run out ?!

I removed my starter to replace the brushes and now I'm not sure what position the starter drive gear is suppose to be in. It was all rusted up so I disassembled it to clean it. Is it suppose to be at the half way point or all the way back against the spring? 1950-8N,angle mount distributor (late), positive ground 6 volt.

Think about how it's mounted in relation to the flywheel - It's on the back side - When engine cranks, the starter disengages when the flywheel kicks the Bendix toward the rear of the tractor.

When the starter is in the crank mode, it pulls the Bendix toward the flywheel which would be midway the starter shaft.

If the drive was rusty, seriously consider replacing it. The rust pits will keep it from spinning freely through it's travel to engage and disengage. It might not give you trouble right away, but it will eventually.

Is the correct position like this ? Because mine is all the way rearward.

Joe.......the picture show EXTENDED to fit into the flywheel crank'em-up ring-gear. When the engine starts ...ie... flywheel speed is faster then starter crank'em speed, the Bendix will RETRACT to the left. This then disengages the starter gears and you release yer BIG starter thumb button. Simple, eh? ......Dell
