Starter runs on

Still having problems getting started. Sometimes it seems the starter remains engaged when I release the starter switch and keeps going until I turn off the key. The key should have nothing to do with the starter circuit, and I can engage the starter with the starter switch when the key is off. Is it possible (probable?) that the starter bendix went bad and is not disengaging? Any other ideas? Good spark on all 4 cylinders on my old spark plug with 5/16" gap, 1950 8N, front mount distributer.

Thanks again!

Art........yep, you are correct, the ignition switch has 'nuttin' to do with the starter circuit. Usually a "goose" to the throttle will speed up the engine enuff to allow the starter Bendix to disengage. The starter Bendix must be SQUEEKY clean. Sometimes you can withdraw the 8" starter screws and withdraw the starter motor about 1/2-in and squirt the #ELL outta the Bendix and it will drain (and drip-dry) out one of the cotter-keyed tranny drains.

2nd thing to do is WIRE-BRUSH the #ELL outta that 1/2-in gap for a GOOD ground before re-tightening the 8"-screws. ........HTH, Dell

8n hs a 3 terminal solenoid. uses ground. thus key switch has no effect on it.

thus if staying engaged.. it's a bendix issue.

By this statement do you mean it keeps turning the engine over, or just doesn't release the flywheel?
If it just doesn't release the flywheel then I'm in concert with the other posters.
If it keeps turning the engine over there's another problem.

The engine keeps turning and I can hear the starter is still running. After this episode, I pulled the plugs and they were dry, so according to Dell's earlier post they plugs are probably firing. I'll try pulling the starter, cleaning and lubricating the bendix. If that doesn't work, sounds like a new bendix is in my future. Thanks again for the help!

bendix needs to be clean.. but not conventionally lubed. oil and grease will make it drag.

a dry lube like silicone spray and then a wipe down is about all you want.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong.
Is your engine running and the starter still turning, or is the starter just turning the engine over? (this actually happened to me)
If it's running, I'm 100% with SoundGuy.
No grease/oil. Just collects dust for a "do-over".
