Starter solenoid

Rebuilt the 8N, put the fully charged 6V bat. in, reversed the polarity, turned the key, hit the switch and got only a buzzing noise from the solenoid atop the starter motor. What did I do wrong? Is the thing bad? Worked fine when I tore it down. Any thoughts?

Assuming you have the correct solenoid installed correctly, it is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

Jim.......surprizingly enuff, the 3-terminal starter solenoid on top of yer starter motor (and neither the motor) don't care iff'n its positive or negative ground.

Me? I think you have BAD GROUND where yer starter motor endplate fits into yer tranny hole. Take a wire brush onnna drill motor and clean all that nice shiny paint outta there. And yer 6V starter motor will whine 'stedda' rummpa-rump. ........the grounded Dell

You said "reversed polarity".What the heck does that mean, that you installed the battery neg ground? The tractor should pos g.---lha

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I will check and clean all connections but I suspect that when I painted the block I painted the surface where the starter mates with the block. The starter was'nt installed at the time. Who knew? (Well, you guys did...) I will keep you posted.

Yep, buff it out bright & shiny. Check out tip # 36 before you loosen the starter.
