Starter Stuck in engaged position

Hey Guys,

Hoping not to start as much controversy as my question about spark plugs :).

My starter bendix is in the engaged position (Brand new starter.... stupid me took the cardboard out that the company put
there so the gear didn't move.. I had no idea that would be a problem and just gave it a little spin... oops!). I've been
trying to find the answer online, and haven't found it yet. I've hooked it up to jumper cables hoping it would reset, but no
luck. I've seen a video on using the bench grinder wire wheel to get it up to speed - wouldn't turning it on its own power do
the same thing?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If you can get the starter in, you may have to drain the block and remove the petcock and move the oil filter over a little or if the generator is on the left, you may have to take the oil filter off. But once the starter is in, it will start the engine and then retract. That's what I did with my NAA. I've never had to try the wire wheel trick.

I seem to recall the solution for this problem, if the starter is already installed, is starting the engine. The Bendix then normally retracts once the flywheel exceeds starting RPM. As Jim notes, if the starter is not already installed, you might have some (solvable) clearance issues or you could use the spin up trick with a spinning tool you are already aware of.

Just a thought; On the 9n/8n starter holes in the bell housing, those holes really don't give enough room to reinstall a starter without a lot of cussing, especially if it is engaged. Looking at the starter hole, front to back, locate the roughly 2 o'clock position on the hole. Grind a little relief at that area, so the starter can be easily installed. That's what I and several of my friends have done and it saves a lot of grief.
