Starter switch discrepancies

Probably been discussed before but I can't find any reference to it.
Have a '56 green vertical steering wheel JD 420W. Brother is working on an identical version of the 420W which has a starter switch that has no small external post so no place to attach the wire like it was previously set up. He has installed the starter which will crank but not start. Hasn't checked for spark at the plug wires. My 420 is identical except that the switch has no external small post on it. My starter is also in the shop for repair, i.e. new drive assy and replace the contact lug that the switch uses to energize the starter. My starter has a small gauge wire with an eyelet on the end that attaches to the battery terminal post on the switch. Didn't see where the other end goes. I have a JD repair manual for the 420 and see nothing about this difference, even in the wiring diagram section. There is also a discrepancy in the parts book as it shows the starter attaching with to bolts like most starters do, but ours attaches with a single tapered bolt which is not shown. Have I missed something?
