Starter Switch Rod

Dr_Rockwell14

1940 Ford 9n
I'm converting my 9n to 12v after the generator failed and using the opportunity to fix the cobbled up wiring that was put on, somewhere along the lines a solenoid was installed where the starter switch normally is, I removed it and the makeshift cover they had for the hole, the problem I'm facing is that the rod that engaged the starter switch is missing? the button by my shifter fully pushes down, but no rod is in there. is this an easy replace? or is there a bypass I can do for that switch? Thank you.

I don't believe that is the right rod for it, but what is the process of replacing it? do I have to take off the shifter cover to get it in?
I have never replaced mine. I would guess that yes, you'll have to remove the cover. I suppose it's possible to do what needs to be done thru the hole the push button covers, but I'd be surprised if it were that easy. I am sure someone else here can give you a solid answer on that.

Part number 9N11512
possible source:

I had to replace one a few years ago. I made the replacement rod from a driveshaft out of a junked weed wacker that had the gear drive.
I cut if a bit long and then ground to fit after repairing the worn push lever P.N. 9N11515 and replacing the pin 9N11511. Been a while, but it seems I had the top of the steering box off to do that.

Here is the pushbutton side. The neutral lock out rod is busted off--should be much longer than this oneView attachment 117706
thanks, that's a good visual, I did pull the button out of mine just to look, couldn't see anything unusual besides that rod is gone unfortunately. I'll probably just end up getting a universal push button and mount it on my dash instead of messing around trying to replace that rod

The early 9Ns had a dash mounted push button. Available from this site.

For 9N serial number <12499 1939 to 1940. Starter Switch (push type). Replaces: 1996487 Delco, 405C Delco. (Not the same as Triangular 9N11450B 1940 to 1947) (TIS DR405C). (Item #: 105684, Ref: 9N11450A) $10.80

yup, that's probably what I'll get and just wire my 12v kit right into the dash switch instead of the other one, it eliminates the safety, but up until now, I didn't even realize it had a neutral safety, the way it was wired previously diverted around it in a conviluted way.

Here is a Figure from the 9N-2N 1943 Service Manual. The rod looks to have a cotter pin in it. Not sure if that can be easily removed to take the rod out from the switch side?

I think AwesomeHenry made it and all 32 pictures were on Photobucket & I saved them before they went from free to pay. Also, FarmerDan put them on a pdf on his site, but that is gone since his passing. I can’t make a pdf file without spending $28 per month. Later: turns out I can post 10 pictures at a time, so they will follow.
