Starter won't disengage

Last fall went to start the 861 and the drive lunched. All teeth broke off. Got a new drive from CNH and had a local starter shop but the drive on.

Fast forward to today. Hit the starter and once tractor is running, you can hear the drive is still engaged.

From searches, it could be burrs on the ring gear? A split is only way to fix that, correct?

Drive is new and clean. This is the first start with the new drive. Going to go out to the shop and pull the starter tomorrow, but wondering what options I have.

Thanks!
Chris

Solenoid sticking will do that also and will burn out the starter fast. Or yes ring gear problems which some times can be cleaned up with a file or sticking starter button

OK, look at this...
Drive teeth rubbing on starter housing. It is like the drive cannot extend all the way to kick back and disengage.

There is only one drive for this starter, correct? Grind the end of the gear down so it has clearance (that is pretty rednecky)?

Must have been made in "land of never right" because it was the only one listed on the CNH site. Ground about 3/8" off the length of the teeth with a bench grinder and all is OK now.

I took about a 1/8" off first and it was still too long. It would then retract, but ypu could see where the ring gear was trying hard to grind it down. Took the remainder and it is good.

Now can't get to run past idle. Too kean
Going to take the carb off for the 4th time and see what I can find...

Here are the pictures of the drive being too long. Would not upload from my phone.

Ended up grinding 3/8" off the end of the drive with a bench grinder to make it the right length. I could have used the old drive as a template for length, but I did not have it anymore.
