starter won't engage engine-revisited

Well, it wasn't the battery. Dunk gets the gold star by correctly saying it was the bendix. The pin came out that holds it on the shaft.

Not realizing it was missing, I pulled the starter shaft right out of the bendix and the bendix fell. But just a little bit. It was greasy and I only had a grip with the tips of my fingers, but I was able to get a nut driver into the hole which helped me get it out. A little prayer helped to.

The bendix appears to be in good shape, not bent or anything, just missing the pin.

It helped that the starter hole had been elongated, but I swear I don't remember it being that way before. Maybe the prayer???

Now, how do I keep the new pin from falling out again?

Thanks again to all you who helped.

Roy........you are luckier than most, catching yer bendix before it fell into the tranny housing; howsomevers, the tranny housing has plenty of room for spare bendix storage. Almost every N-Split finds bendix parts in tranny housing. Notta biggy.

As fer yer wallered-out pin hole, ain't no law that sez you can't use the next size larger spring rollpin. Just driller out to fit. Simple, eh?

Usually, the bendix's internal spring keeps TIGHT on the rollpin ennyways, so it seldom falls out.

TIP: gently clamp yer starter shaft UPSIDE-DOWN so you can use yer armpit to put pressure on the internal bendix spring and eazily tap yer new rollpin into the hole. Some even grind a "chisel" slant across the rollpin end for eazier insertion........Dirty Pitts Dell

One more thing.. greasy bendix don't work as good as shiny clean ones.. hit it with carb or brake cleaner when you stick it back in..
