starter wont stop

got a early 8n front mount, starter and everything electrical is only about 2 years old, conversion setup, last two times I tried to start it the starter will not stop , had to pull the battery cable to stop it, any idea whats causing this ?, it has a key switch and the starter button down by the shifter.
Thanks
Ron

I am by no means an expert here, but same thing happened to me on my 9n... not sure if it is the same set up, but... Did the same with unhooking the battery. I disconnected the wires to the starter switch and then I pulled the starter switch underneath the battery. Mine was stuck in the engaged position. I cleaned it up a little, pressed and depressed the switch a few times and then put it back in. Worked ever since. Just make sure that you put it in the same way you pulled it out, or I think it will work backwards... read that on here once.

I charged the battery, had key off position, pushed the starter button and it engaged the starter and would not stop again, cant figure that out , with the key in the off position....

hey will all crank with the key in the off position...

One theory is poor contact in the starter switch (by gear shift) creates enough heat to electrically weld the contacts together.

One way to check this is with an ohm meter. [b:2c6372a0ec]This is assuming it is a 6 volt, positive ground.[/b:2c6372a0ec] With negative battery (starter feed) disconnected check the connectivity between the positive battery cable and the screw terminal on the starter switch. If working properly, it should read open - If it shows continuity between the starter switch and ground you've found the problem.

I'm not real strong with electric theory so don't crucify me if I've bollocksed the advise - One of the gurus will be along shortly to straighten us out.

One other possibility is the bendix is hung up in the extended position which means you'll have to pull the starter. I hope this is not your situation as it happened to me and I had to split the tractor to remove the bendix from the starter before I could unbolt the starter.

Does the starter disengage after the tractor is running and you remove the negative (starter feed) battery cable? If the starter quits turning you're in the clear and it's likely the first problem I mentioned above.

Well that is the way it should work as far as having the key off since it is not part of the start circuit. Now as far as the starter not disengaging you probably have a soliniod going bad and it is sticking or you have a weak battery which will cause the points in the soliniod to weld up and that in turn also means a bad soliniod

Your starter solenoid is more then likely stuck.

Hook it up and tap with hammer to disengage. Mine did this a while back before it went out all together.

I disconnected the push button starter switch, i left the wire hanging not touching anything, reconnected the battery cable and it started turning over agin, does this indicate the push button is bad ?

No, it would indicate that the switch is NOT the problem. Disconnect the small wire at the solenoid and if it still cranks by itself then replace the starter solenoid.
