This is not my Tractor. 8n .I don’t have any history on it. I posted before with the transmission seal was leaking into the bellhousing. transmission clutch shaft had a groove in it. I put on a repair sleeve .getting ready to put it back together and when I turn the flywheel by Hand,the starter spins both ways is that normal?

Hi Mfrench,
Yes its normal. The starter drive in the pic is extended and locked, so the pinion gear is engaged, and is turned by the flywheel.
If you were to turn the hockey puck shaped end of the drive CCW, it will ratchet as it turns if the barrel on the drive is held.
The drive retracts when flywheel speed centrifugal force unlocks the detent, then unscrews back to its "shorter" self.
My guess is that it unlocks under 300 rpm, maybe about 250rpm.
If crank with the key off, the flywheel doesnt quite turn fast enough, so the drive stays engaged, for the next try.
Here are a loaded drive on a round shaft Phillips screwdriver, that was spun against a wire wheel on a bench grinder to retract it, and engaged and disengaged drive.
