Starting a Tractor

Ifn you don't have sparkies, starting fluid won't do nothin but wash the lubrication off yer rings, and sleeves.

Ifn you have gas dripping out yer choke butterfly shaft, yer carb is flooded, and yer plugs are gassed.

You may need to worry about yer float, and your needle valve that it operates.

Thanks to those who responded to my July 20 note on starting an 8n after 5 years. I utilized a lot of the recommendations and this last weekend gave it a try. I put in a new battery, poured trans fluid in and let it set for a while and turned it over with no problems. I then replaced the plugs. It turns over but wont fire. Gas goes through the sediment bowl to the carb but when I pulled a plug to check after serveral attempts there was no gas smell on the plug. Can I use starting fluid? I am not much of a mechanic so I am a little frustrated. There is a gas leak at the choke lever right at the spring. Looks like I will have to replace the packing. Any thoughts on where I can go from here would be appreciated.

"It turns over but wont fire"

How do you know that? Did you check for spark?
Get an old plug, open the gap to 3/16, ground it to a rust & paint free spot on the head, turn the key on & crank the engine. You have three possibilities: no spark, weak and/or intermittent yellow spark, or a bright blue spark. What is it? Next, check for fuel. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb; as long as the fuel is turned on, you should see gas flowing out of the carb.

Once you confirm it has spark & fuel in the carb bowl, then try starting fluid.
