starting issue

Good day, my 8n has developed a starter issue. I tested and replaced the Solenoid and it now starts, but as long as I hold down the starter button. But once I release the button it dies. Placing your hand on the starter it feels like it has a loop. Any suggestions. I( have changed it to a 12 volt.

You need to hook it up so the coil gets power when
the key is on . The way you have it the coil is only
getting power while the button is pushed

(quoted from post at 14:51:08 11/27/18) can you explain the process. Im an little slow is the process.

So it was running fine then it just started acting up? Are u saying u have to crank on starter in order for it to run? Is it actually running or just halfway running? It would seem your is taking a beating. If it's actually running and only getting juice to coil thru starter button I don't see how that could just febeop on it's own.

Sounds like you have the charge wire from the ammeter on the wrong side of solenoid. It should go on the battery cable side, not side that goes to starter.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the [b:654c4848f0]BROWN[/b:654c4848f0] wire from the right terminal on the ignition switch is connected to the [b:654c4848f0]POSITIVE[/b:654c4848f0] terminal on the coil.

When the ignition switch is turned [b:654c4848f0]ON[/b:654c4848f0], then continuous power flows through the switch to the coil.

Note the [b:654c4848f0]WHITE[/b:654c4848f0] wire from the solenoid to the starter switch.

When the starter switch is pushed [b:654c4848f0]ON[/b:654c4848f0], then power flows temporarily through the solenoid to the starter.

After the engine stars, then the starter switch is released and power no longer flows to the starter.

Once the engine starts, the coil provides power to the distributor.

When the ignition switch is turned [b:654c4848f0]OFF[/b:654c4848f0], then there is no power flow to the coil, distributor, and plugs.

Hope this helps.

First off it would be better if you posted this in the 9N/2N/8N forum

That said good chance to have the ignition wire that hooks to the solenoid to get power to the switch is hooked to the wrong side of the solenoid. Only thing that should be hooked to the starter side of the solenoid is the starter NO wires at all. Or you have the wrong type of solenoid or you have the solenoid on backwards since there is a right and wrong way to put a N series solenoid on
