starting issues

My 1950 6v sidemount will not start, or even try to start when the engine is cold. After i give it a shot of starting fluid it fires up and runs smooth. Once the engine is warm it will fire up everytime without having to use starting fluid. Spark and fuel flow is good but I still have to use starting fluid on the first start of the day. It just started doing this a few weeks ago. I put fresh gas in it along with some heet but it didnt help. Any ideas? Thanks

Jimbo;
After reading all yer prev. posts, on this problem.....I think you have, changed the carb settings, for what ever reason??, and now, your air to fuel is off....this is my guess...AND now you have contaminated sparkplugs.!!! (Clean or replace all of the sparkplugs, with AL 437 plugs!!!
May also have carb gasket leaking/sucking air into the carb...that will also change air to fuel mix.
First .....get the engine running at idle...bring it up to operating temp....shut the engine off, and try these settings, on the carb!!!!
Do everything as stated....to the word.....:

If this does not work for you......post back for more help!!!,
OR.....call me @ 1-406- 677-2526, and I can/will set up yer carb for you, over the phone.....!!! BTDT...many times!!!

Thank you. I will definitely try that when I get home today. And yes I did monkey with the carb settings so I"m sure I got something screwed up. It does run very smooth when I do get it sttarted, so hopefully I"m just a tweak or two away from getting it to start on its own. Thanks a million!

Gary, your advice is great - I just have one question: after making the adjustments to the idle-mix screw and the idle speed screw (both at dead idle) - do I adjust the main jet while the engine is still at dead idle, or do I change throttle settings for this adjustment?
If this is a dumb question, I apologize.

Thanks, Joe

I had the smae problem a year or so ago. No effort with carb. or timing seem to help. My sulusion, drill a hole in the "S" shape air cleaner pipe. Clean the pipe throughly to remove all shavings. Size the hole so a bolt will plug it. Your first start, remove the bolt and spay in starter fluid, replace the bolt and your good to go. Doesn't solve your basic problem but gets you going.

Not a dumb ?...and no need for, apology!!!
The adjusting needle you call the main jet, is not really a jet....all that needle does is regulate the amount of fuel, going to the MAIN JET, insuring that when more power is ask of the engine, it has enough fuel to accomplish that task.

That needle is suposed to be set while engine is under load. Full wide open throttle will let you adjust it in that position, BUT to make it easy on you, I say....just set that needle to two full turns out, and forget about it.
Two full turns out will give you enough fuel to run under MOST power needed to run the engine at full power under load!!!!

Sorry I was late....did not see your reply, and I hope this helps you understand what that Adjust needle does!!!
