starting problems

on my ford 8 n tractor when starting a cold engine it takes about five tries to start it. just putters a couple times and dies , when it does start engine turns over slow then picks up speed, then it runs ok. i put a new carburetor on it could it be a adjust screw problem?

When was the last time it was tuned up ? Cleaned and gapped plugs, set points gap, adjusted valves, cleaned battery connections.
doesn’t have points any more, spark plugs are just fine, adjust valves? never had, battery cables are new and are clean,,,,,,i still think it’s a carburetor adjustment

Check to be SURE the choke plate is closing ALL the way. Maybe your choke linkage needs adjusting. Also check for air leaks around the carburetor and manifold. Changing speeds while cranking sounds like valve adjustment or sticky valves

Also, my understanding on internal combustion engines, is that there is a chemical reaction within the combustion chamber that occurs when a cold engine gets started....a big part of this is moisture....condensation. You need extra fuel to compete with the condensation at startup to get the engine going.....that's why Detroit had an exhaust loop through the intake manifold and a temperature spring attached to that and the carburetor choke butterfly that automatically slowly opened the choke baffle as the engine warmed up to keep the engine running.

Since you are the "automatic" part of the startup, you need to have total choke butterfly closed initially....even those with a couple of small holes and when the engine starts loping.....gasping for air.....give it some till it quits by pushing in your choke lever somewhat etc. etc. etc. until the engine has warmed up enough to drive out the condensation and run smoothly on its own. My riding lawnmowers with BS engines like a fully closed choke for fast startups.....I have found that usually when I have an engine that's hard starting, there is binding in the choke linkage and the choke doesn't close completely.

Some diesels are good at telling you when the condensation is burned off.....you get white smoke at startup that dissipates shortly after starting...the colder the weather the thicker and longer it lasts.
