Steering boxes

When attempting to adjust the sector backlash on my early 48N (round covers) I can't get them any tighter without them starting to bind. Figure that means they are worn out. I have one of the later steering boxes on a 49N parts tractor that's seen a lot less wear. What would be a good way to evaluate the condition of the newer steering box? Or would it be more practical to just go ahead and rebuild the newer box to use on the working 48?

newer style boxes are nicer.. your call on the swap...

see what kind of backlash and thrust bearing play it has. ie.. steering wheel fall / rise, and rotational lag between steering wheel and sector arm movement.. also look at bushing wear as fore / aft movement of the sector arm before rotational movement starts.

on your round cover box.. it is suposed to snug up as you remove backlash.. it's not exactly clear what you menat when you said binding.. the covers? or the steering itself?

I noticed the binding through the steering wheel. When I back off the adjustment slightly it gets sloppy again. Can't seem to get it right.

Checked the later model steering box and it seems in pretty good shape. Guess I'll try and use it on the '48. Any thing to do other than swap drag links?

what is the correct procedure for cover adjustment, just curious do they both turn clockwise?

as you turn them, it snugs the gears up.. you are stuck between one hole or the other.. if one is loose nad the other is stiff.. it's a toughy.. that's why the later boxes are better.. you adjust a stud.. etc.
