Steering column question ford 5000

My Ford 5000

Does part A move inside part B? On the
spindle end of part B you can see part A
and it appears it can be punched out with
the right tool. It appears to be stuck.
Does a o-ring go on it in the inside? OR
is it pressed on and leave it alone?

I don't know, because I've never had one apart, because it's not supposed to be taken apart. You'll notice in the parts book that they don't break that assembly down.

Is that a 5200 steering column? The big piece has course splines that do only big changes in steering, while the little part is for fine steering movements and it will twist a bit so that the tractor does not walk or constantly over steer from bumps and minor shocks. As you make minor steering inputs the small shaft will twist, but apply minor pressure to gradually/gently change the steering until it is finally corrected and the twist is removed from the small shaft. SO you have a minor steering section and a major steering section,,, if that makes sense. I dont remember if this was the ford made unit or the saginaw? made unit. But as Bern says, the parts are all married or custom fitted/machined and cannot be replace with generic parts to each unit. The small shaft usually has a twist to the right as more right hand turns are made with the tractor, at least in my experience. early units usually were stripped out at the top where the upper shaft came loose and wore the splines off in some cases.

I get what you are saying. But the 2 pieces i am referring look as if they were pressed together. Look at pic closer. Do they come apart? or leave it alone? Someone on this forum has taken apart similar columns and knows what they are looking at. The moving piece you spoke about is off finally and was stuck in place. I had a heck of a time removing it. Its clean now and will work properly as should. That piece isnt in this photo. What you seeing is whats inside of those two pieces. It appears it can be punched out from the sline end as you can see it from the small hole atop of spline. As I continue, I feel this part is pressed in to stay still and not move. The other part moves allowing holes to line up so fluid can pass.Just looking for clarity...

The 5000 (5100) high all purpose or the 5200 (row drop are entitrly different. They are asking what tractor you have.
