Steering gear box

On my late model 8N, I just replaced the top end of the steering column. Now I notice that when the steering wheel turns right, the steering wheel goes down on the column and then goes back up when turned back to the left. If I need to remove and rebuild the gear box, what are the parts that I should order before starting.
Thanks for all your help....

you repalced the box top? ( column and box top are an assy )

was it new/repop / used? did it have a race installed.

did you put the upper thrust bearing in?

Sorry, I meant that I had replaced the top bearing in the column and I noticed that the bearing that sits in the bottom of the column was shot, so I replaced it. It was after that, I noticed the steering wheel going up and down. It is steering hard, also. I guess I should have just rebuilt at that time.

Sounds like it is time to completely overhaul it. Lower bearing my be gone or damaged. Not that hard to do.

if the box had a race in the top.. and you put in a new thrust bearing and adjusted shim stack and it still rises and falls. it's liekly the lower thrust bearing is shot too.

It can be a real pain to get those thrust bearing installed without the bottom one getting out of place.

There should have been a small cupped thing on the bottom of the shaft that is there to retain the bearing while it is installed. Got to be done really deftly too. If that bottome bearing is out of place it's off with the top housing and coulmn again and clean out all the metal parts that will be floating around in there.

Nasty work!
