But how does the top bearing or thrust bearing get any grease just wondering

The bearing at the top of the pinion gear (attached to the end of the steering wheel shaft) also gets lubricated by splash. There is a zerk fitting just under the steering wheel to lubricate the bearing up there.

Early 9ns did not have the grease zerk.....but you can purchase the dust shield cup with part number 9n3669B from this site and replace yours if it don't have the zerk hole.Works fine. don b
