how do you know if you have a 9n or 8n

8N - 4 speed trans. 9/2N - 3 speed trans.

8n's had both the side and front mount distributors

Take look at Johns site for all the info you need to ID what you have

9n had the front mount distributor unless an 8n engine has replaced the original 9n engine . But then the earlier 8n had front mount distributors also . Another obvious sign of it being a 9n is that you will have the clutch & left brake on the left side with right brake on the right side .HTH ! God bless
