steering pinion adjustment

Following the directions I pulled the steering wheel and now have remove the lock nut but the lower nut I can't understand how by tightening it will drive the pinion further into the sector gears which I need because the the steering is skipping at certain points.

Can someone please explain how tightening the adjusting nut drive the shaft down instead of puling it up like it seems like its doing?

If you loosened the adjusting nut, would it let the shaft be positioned lower? The tightened the lock nut? New to me!

Will need to disassemble the gearbox and
add shims between pinion and lower bearing
to get the gear to drop down lower. My
guess is your gears are pretty bad shape
and good luck

Just recently installed new gears in a 9. Gears were made in Turkey look good but didn't fit worth a crap had to do a lot of shimming and grinding to make them work

On my '41 9n,I replaced the bushings [similar to main and rod bearing shells] and found some thicker thrust
washers at an old tractor shop. Shimming the sectors closer together did a similar tightening of the
steering .

Don't they have shims on yesterdaystractor site?

You could start with measuring the play in the sector shafts with a dial indicator on the outside ends. If
you eliminate the excess play there and the bushings,it may not be necessary to worry about the steering
shaft play.

Here are some part numbers for inner and outer shims for sector gears.
outer as required
2 9N3543A Washers - .122 thickness
2 9N3543B Washers - .124 thickness
2 9N3543C Washers - .126 thickness
inner as required
2 9N3563A Washers - .255 thickness
2 9N3563B Washers - .250 thickness
2 9N3563C Washers - .245 thickness

(quoted from post at 18:06:36 01/31/22) They are [or were] for sale here, but pricey.

Yeah pricey is a kind word.........with freight and State, County, and district taxes it came to 356 dollars for both. I have never heard of district taxes and never been charged County taxes but will call them later to explain.

In Wisconsin, we have a 5% state sales tax.
In my county, we also have a 0.5% county sales tax.
Until recently, we also had a 0.1% stadium district tax.
All three were collected in one fell swoop and the state transferred the appropriate amounts to the counties and districts.

For comparison sake my new 3 piece steering set I purchased from Surplus Tractor , Fargo ND March 1971 would now cost in in today's dollars $ 672.82 according to Government website.
I have received 50 years of use so that helps.

I got my new sector gears, bushings et al. I'm going to make a video putting it back together because people really need to know its not the nightmare or can of worms I imagined.

OK as the pics illustrate the sector arms were badly worn and I installed new ones ...........but it is still jumping gears and throwing the steering out of wack. I still don't get how the pinion gear adjusts up and down.

Ron , You need a new pinion gear also as I'm sure it is worn badly also.

When I replaced the sector arms it wasn't clear to me how to replace the pinion gear. Does it come out of the bottom or the top?
