sticker shock

I just picked up new service and parts manuals for a round fender 110 mower. $121.00! I suppose its good that they are available but crap! While I was there I priced a set of fan gearsfor an unstyled B. I don't need them but have used them as a standard to gauge Deeres prices. I've watched them go from $240 twenty yrs ago to get this. .... $998.00! A head gasket for the same tractor has gone from $8.00 to over $85.00 and now they are unavailable. I know this tractor is fast approach ing 80 yrs old and shouldnt be surprised but i still miss the old days when tractor restoration was a poor man's hobby.

When I redid my 1936 B awhile back early to mid 1990's ?? CRS !
There were still alot more new parts available from JD then I could afford. Seems to of really been a stock pile of parts on the old ones.
I did some repair work to a 520 a few years before that and had more problems finding stuff for it.

That news gives me mixed feeling in a way since I've quit restorations. When I was, seems I was chasing parts all over the country, driving miles, looking, begging people to sell me something, internet, phone calls, scrounging and locating junk yards or some old piece I heard about, and then scrounging in mud or snow or heat looking for some old rusty buried part and then having to listen to some dude tell he how valuable it was, or walking miles of aisles at shows or swap meets looking for a part, PLUS spending at least $100 per day and that was on a good day LOL $500 to $1000 + on other days. I used to get mad at grouchy old farts (who had nice restored tractors at a show) with an attitude such as I GOT MINE NOW YOU GET YOURS however, looks like I've turned out just like them. Still, in the day I must have enjoyed it, else I wouldnt have done it so not to complain...

I'm like the 86 yo gent in the Jimmy Buffett Song "..... Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilons, and drinks his Green Label each day, writing his memoirs, loosin his hearing, BUT HE DONT CARE WHAT MOST PEOPLE SAY"..........."Jimmy some of its magic, some of its tragic, but I had a good life all the way"

Still all in all, its been a good ride.

The sleeve is the high priced part almost 200.bucks brgs are 60 I ordered them earlier NAPA wanted 55 for the brgs but they listed as 2 pc brg not 3

You can buy them off ebay for less than half that.
Napa asked me 240 bucks for a water pump, bought one off ebay for 90 bucks.

The last sleeve I got from Deere I had to hone it on the ID.(MEXICO) Don't get the ID too tight. This was after I had polished the gov. shaft of nicks & burrs. If I need a new one, I make my own now. The 2 piece brg. NAPA has is a roller. It works but I like the ball brg better.

OK,
$485 for a steering shaft for a 1970 120.
$175 for just the lever and shaft to operate the forward and back hydro drive.
Already more than it would be worth when finished.
