New solenoid, from a YT sponsor, and cleaned all the connections after trying to start my 8N with a stuck fan belt a couple of weeks ago. (posted 6-16) Not a whimper when pushing the starter. Yes, the ignition was on. Jumped her at the starter post from a 12v and she cranked well but didn't start because of flooding, but that's another story.

Could it be a bad starter, or what else? Getting frustrated and I can hear the grass growing.

Thanks

If you jumped the starter with 12 volts and it turned over then you starter is probably OK. I would check the cables and solenoid.

The ignition doesn't have to be on and sahouldn't be on until ready to run the motor.Testing the starter with key on will result in burned points, coil, etc. The ignition, and start circiuts are seperate and need not be used together.Figure out your problem by removing the starter, get it checked by a shop in your area.---lha

Which way is the small post facing?

The block, or the outside?

The small post is facing the block as in your photos.

I misspoke and was questioning the starter switch, not the motor as it seemed to crank the engine fine when being jumped. Just trying to figure out with my limited understanding of the electricals why there is absolutely no response after a new solenoid when pushing the starter button.

Thanks for the help.

ource & part number of your new solenoid, please. Link if possible. Thanks.

Take a small wire and jump from the small terminial to a good ground. If the solenoid is good and the right type the starter should turn over. MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN NEUTRAL AS YOU ARE BYPASSING THE SAFETY SWITCH.

From your symptoms it sounds like a problem in the starter relay circuit. If the circuit was closing when you operate the starter switch you would at least hear a 'click' as the armature pulls in. You didn't say why you changed the relay, nor had anything worked prior.
That circuit consists of a starter switch, the starter relay operate coil and the wiring. Any number of ways to check but I'd begin by checking the coil, the coil ground, the switch, battery supply and the wiring.

pull the solenoid connection to the starter.. but leave solenoid hooked up.. ground small terminal while other bat terminal is hooked up to good cables with clean terminals and posts.. grounding the small terminal of the correct solenoid should make it 'clunk' and pull in, then read bat voltage ont he stud normally hooked to the starter.. if that works but she won't crank over hooked up.. make sur ethe 6v battery jumped to the starter has enough juice to actually turn her over.. sounds like you were using a donor battery to jump test her?.. etc.

Everything worked fine until I tried to start her up with a jammed fan belt. A faint noise then, and still, nothing.

I'll try the new suggestions, really appreciate it. Thanks.

tarter ought to overcome any fan belt. What is a "jammed fan belt"?

Jam is kinda between preserves, and jelly.

I can't imagine why it would be on his fan belt.

I had replaced the manifold gasket and when repositioning the generator didn't see that the belt had come off the pulley on the other side of the engine. That, to the best of my knowledge is what started this mess. The first time I went to start her up nothing turned, a faint noise was heard that sounded like it came from under the hood to the left, then silence.

I doubt that the belt is a player. Be SURE transmission is in neutral. Use a short piece of wire and connect it 1) from right solenoid large post to center small terminal (see what happens), 2) repeat from small center term to left large post, 3) small terminal to a good chassis ground point.
