Strang Distributor Problem

Have minor problem with 801 distributor.

Was having problems with the 800 loosing power when shredding or pulling something heavy. I though it was time to change the breaker points. While I was at it, I decided to take off the distributor and clean it. Did not use any spray stuff, only used small wire brushed to get dirt and oil off all around. Also cleaned the area where it sits on the engine block.

Put every thing back together and left the two distributor side bolts loose so that I could set and time the engine. Got it started and timed it.

HOWEVER, with the engine running when I begin to tighten the distributor side blots the engine begins to sputter and wants to turn off. As soon as I take the pressure off and loosen the bolts the engine runs OK. If I turn the engine off and evenly tighten the bolts so the distributor sits like it should on the block, the tractor will not start. But as soon as I loosen the bolts and they are on just hand tight, the engine will start and sound great.

Have never had this problem with any of my other Ford tractors.

his makes it sound like distr does not sit down on block by gravity or light hand pressure, but only if you tighten bolts on hold down clamp. {...distributor sits like it should on the block} If that is true, the with cap off, do the tightening and see if rotor, points cam, etc. are being pushed up as you tighten.. If yes, the I suspect the rod connecting distributor to oil pump is not located as it should be or foreign material holding rod out of place.
