I have a strange question:has anyone tried to solve the problem of Ns going too fast for tiller.Aside from the hi-lo combo,or other similar [$$$$$].What my mind[?] came up with was some way to reduce the diameter of the rear wheels, maybe 24".My question is:is it possible to make something like that or is some similar rim available?---lha,the inquiring mind?

You need at least a 3:1 reduction in speed for the tiller application. Since the circumference of the wheel is directly proportional to the diameter you need to reduce the diameter to 1/3 of stock - in other words something in the neighborhood of 9" wheels....

It sure looks funny though....

That's kinda what I thought, but I know that when I changed from 245-75 to 215-60,theree was a huge difference in my toyota truck.Really reved and made a difference in low and top end.---lha

(quoted from post at 11:53:35 06/28/10) yeah, sure hard to put 9-in rims on 10-in brake drums, eh? ........Dell
here ya go......just weld some cleats on the drums & let her rip!

I think this is a great idea, and I too would like to change the rear tire size.

Go ahead and laugh, but smaller rear wheels would solve a lot of problems with the flathead low power and driveline PTO. I can bog my '52 down with a 4' bushhog easy in 1st gear, sometimes doing only a 2' swath with the mower 6" off the ground. I get full power, just have really thick pasture grass most of the summer.

Lower ground speed would be great Only prob is finding a smaller rim that can be drilled out to fit the 8N hub. Any rim suggestions?

thanks,
Doug

Doug.......didja know its ok to SHARPEN yer brushhog blades??? Just use a 4-1/2" angle grinder and eye protection. Block up the brushhog BEFORE crawling underneath. Yer 26hp 8N tractor has enuff cojones for 5-ft brushhogg. ......safety preacher Dell

(quoted from post at 13:14:10 06/28/10) yeah, brake lugs, but bettcha the diffy will be draggin' and holding everything off'n the ground......giggle
ike a 'wiener' dog leaving center track in the snow.

Dell,

Been there and done that. Still can't cut it, even in 1st gear, darn near wide open throttle. Once the RPMS start to drop it's game over. I must have some thick grass I guess.
