stress on engine block

If the goal is to drop oil pan then isnt there just as much stress on the block whether it is done bolted to the tranny or on an engine stand?

Your logic makes sense to me. Hanging from the tranny or from an engine stand would seem to be equal.

I would think it would be less stressful attached to the tranny. A couple more bolts holding it, and a larger surface to transfer the load to. ????

No doubt there is added stress but is it anything that has ever caused a problem. Having done it many times I never seen any problems. Even if it wasn't designed for the stress of this type doesnt mean it cant take the stress of the engine hanging in this position.
