String trimmer B&D 7700 not feeding string

Good evening: My Black & Decker string trimmer ST7700 is not feeding string automatically, which it is supposed to do. I have compared my string spool with the booklet, mine looks right, but the string never feeds. This is the original, factory-loaded spool. Unit is still within the 2-year warranty, maybe I should take it back to Ace Hardware where I bought it?? Any advice welcome!

well on my stihl u need to tap the spool coil on the ground once it gets short. then it lets more line out. dont know how yours is made. i
never saw on that the line just comes out itself.

Well, this one apparently is supposed to let line out to a certain length, on its own. The instructions specifically say not to tap it on the ground to let line out.

In my experience with string trimmers, they either work as intended, or they don't work, and if they don't work there is nothing you can do to make it work.

Good morning, all: I checked my spool, it says ("ABS"), so supposedly is the good version. I think I will drive to town and take my trimmer to the folks at ACE Hardware. If they can't or won't fix it, I want them to be the ones to say so. The warranty is 2 years, my receipt shows I bought it less than one year ago. What fun!! (BTW, my last trimmer was battery powered, would not charge, LITHIUM batts are a big nuisance) (Before the battery powered unit, I had a gasoline powered unit that was pretty good; I now have a pacemaker, so no machines with unshielded ignition.). ACE Hardware, here I come!

I haven't dealt with a lot of different string trimmers, but for the ones I have, you could always check to make sure the string would advance with the engine off. Fiddle with the head and see if you can get it to advance the line.

One common reason for the string not advancing is a tangle in the spool. The other one is winding the spool backwards. You said your spool was factory-wound, but is it possible to insert it into the head upside-down? Echo uses the same spool for certain straight-shaft and curved-shaft trimmers. You insert it one way in a straight-shaft trimmer, and turn it upside-down in a curved-shaft trimmer. (The two types of trimmers turn their heads in opposite directions.)

Good afternoon, replying to my own post again: At ACE HARDWARE, the clerk came out to my truck in the parking lot, I handed him the reel full of string, he tried to install it upside down. After we got that straight, he put the reel into the machine and wished me a nice day. No power cord, no receptacles in parking lot anyway. So no test of any sort. THANKS TO ACE HARDWARE AND BLACK & DECKER FOR MAKING MY TRIP TO AND FROM TOWN A TOTAL WASTE. Any comments welcome.
