Bought a 68ish 580 ck with a stuck 159 gas from the weeds last thanksgiving . Towed out , hauled home and started soaking ( blaster , acetone /trans fluid , kroil , anything I had around ). Spring came , still not free'd . No problem , took axle loose , pulled pan , sleeves looked nice . Tried tapping with brass on wheights , and on ring gear , no go . Pulled hyd pump , no go . Pulled head , used block of wood , no go ( pistons around even in sleave , crank throws horizontal ) . Noticed when I try to bar it at hyd pump adapter , the sleaves don't move ? Is there anything in the shuttle ( mech shuttle ) that could have seized that hard ? Don't have a problem with rebuilding motor , just would like to get it running to see what else is wrong first . ( was suposed to just have a stuck clutch is why it was parked ) . Think someone tried to start it but failed and washed oil off cyl . Hoe and loader look pretty good , again don't mind spending the money to rebuild just wanna know what all needs rebuilt before tear down .
Thanks again , Mike

P.S. , still curious about the thermostat just sitting in the upper hose ?

That's where the T'stat goes, but usually has a clamp around it. Those engines can seize pretty tight. Working on a 148 right now that I could never bust loose. Engine kits are pretty reasonable.

Thanks John , was begining to think I was " persona non gratas " . Think clamp was there for thermostat just in wrong place . The sleave's not moving is what got me thinking could it be something else ? Gonna try a little more to loosen , between other projects . If that doesn't work I'll try to sneak the rod bolts out , push sleaves out and use a press . Just hate to go through motor and then find out I shoulda went through tranny too , or hyd pump is bad , or etc etc .

i just bought a 540 this spring. classic story "ran when parked but smoked relly bad". i just need the rear end out of it. I will probobly tear it apart next fall or winter and stash all the (usefull to me)parts on a shelf. all my machies have 188 diesel. it has the 159 gas in it. not sure if that fits in your machine but if all else fails make me an off on the engine since i don't need it.

Where are you located Gus ? Think it's saveable just suprised how tight it is . Have never had quite as much trouble out of one that looked this good .

oh, by the way. the guy i bought is from said they put a new clutch in it shortley before it got to the point where it burned so much oil it was not worth running. maybe you could use the clutch too.
