stuck trans NAA

I bought a naa was told it drove fine but while moving it to the road to load it the guy it bought it from said the trans locked up. I assumed it was stuck in 2 gears and didnt think much of it. I loaded it with 1 wheel jacked up. the forks all seem to be in neutral. the trans was very low on oil and all the gears seem to be in good condition along with sliding collars and no sign of metal shaving. I was thinking one of the bearing could be seized but was hoping for some advise

On Saturday I ran into a guy who said he had a Massey 50 or thereabouts and I told him I had a Jube.

Right away he said he had found the gears getting stuck more than once on NAA'a but that there was some kind of port or plug access on the right side that allowed him to get a bar in and unstick it.

I haven't really thought to look until you mentioned it . . . and don't take this as gospel cause for all I know he may have been wrong that it was an NAA.

Someone here may confirm that this method of un-jamming may work so that one doesn't have to remove the cover.

Now that my curiosity has been aroused I'll go check.

When that happened to my 54, NAA(bought it that way) it was the countershaft second gear stuck on countershaft
essentially locking it I n 2nd with or without the connector engaging it
Needless to say you could put it in 3rd or 4th as well
and it tore the teeth off of them. only thing I could figire out was it got low on oil and that gear seized on countrrshaft
..

There IS a big plug on the tranny's right side,
right by your left brake pedal.
Poke around in there with a skinny pointed pry bar. (?)

update I have it figured that no matter what postion the forks are the trans is in 4th gear. so when I put it is any other gear it is locked up. I can drive it in 4th when it is supposed to be in neutral. any ideas?

I am going off of memeory so !!!. the countershaft turns through the 2nd gear on the countershaft until the sliding collar locks it . When that happens, that turns the 2nd gear on the main shaft giving you that ratio. The second gear on the countershaft does not run on a bearing per say. It just runs on the hardened and polished surface of the countershaft itself. When my 2nd gear siezed on the countershaft it essentially locked it into 2nd gear. You could still put it in 3rd or 4th. but you cant turn 2 sets of ratios at the same time and 3rd & 4th got the teeth tore out of them. Umfortunately 3rd & 4th on the countershaft are forged or cast or whatever integral to the countershaft itself as I recall. Which means I had to buy a countershaft & a few gears.( 3rd, 4th, maybe 2nd on main shaft) . Like I said i am going off memory. Anyway, If nothing is missing teeth it should not be that expensive of a fix. It was more time than anything. i did change all the bearings while in there, but my situation was alittle differant than yours cause mine tranny was tore up. I hope you can find it isnt this situation as I beleive it would have to be disassembled to fix. the only real issue I had in the whole deal was getting the seal collars cleaned up so the seal wouldnt leak. I calcualated the seal was .012 smaller ID than the OD of the collars. So I got away with turning them in the lathe to clean them up, took only 2 or 3 000's off of them. It hasnt leaked yet as I can tell and its not a garage queen, It has to work. I am just telling my story of my situation in case it helps you figure your out. Get this, the dealer I bought it from had split it between transmission and center section to remove the coupler between the transmission output and the rear end so they could move it around. It was laying in the bottom of the center section. here it is today.

My memory isnt what it was, but I was just looking at a picture of the NAA transmission. I think I remembered wrong and it was the 4th gear on the countershaft that was siezed on the countershaft just like yours. I dont remember which gear it was but I remeber where it was at in the assembly. Boy, good luck getting that loose while intact. Some of these other fellas with more experiance than me might be able to wave their wand and give you a way to free that up without tearing it apart. like I said i had no choice cause the whole thing had handfulls of teeth in the bottom.

thanks for the info on this cowdog. any idea why the gear siezed on the shaft? I got looking and I think the guy I got it from did drain some oil out of it. I believe all the gears are in tact.

It sat on the dealer lot over in Oregon for years
I saw it on Tractor House. I had them haul it to s.e. idaho and bought it there.. I can only guess it got ran low on oil and that gear seized on the countershaft. The power goes down to countershaft from input and it turns all the time. Lile I said they are not on bearings, just a polished steel journal. it dont take much to make it seize Cause its supposed to get oil splashed up on it any time engine is running.

thought I would share my crude and temporary fix for this problem. after trying to heat and free up the four gear from the counter shaft. I used my cutting torch through the drain plug hole to cut all the teeth off the gear. flushed with gas and air and filled with clean used hyd oil to flush the rest of the metal out. also put I magnet on drain plug. as I had suspected the rest of the trans is worn and it makes a little noise but works well in all gears except for forth don't work at all. now need to find a gear set for it.

Check " smiths old ford tractors" website. He has aplace were he sells used parts. I have bougjt gears from him. He also has parts diagram so you can order the correct gear. If he doesntbhave one check " wengers". I feel for ya man, I know the job well you are faced with. But in rhe end when it is all done you can point at it and say " I fixed that". I wish I lived closer, I would come give you a hand.. let me know if I can help any other way.
