studded AG tires

I just bought a 1985 Ford 3910, and it has studded AG tires. I have never seen this before and I'am curious as to why someone would do this. What would be the benefit of this?

When I used to work for a town they had a Zamboni, for resurfacing the hockey rink, that fit on the 3 pt. hitch. It had studded tires like yours. I think the fronts were studded as well to help with steering. Dave

Maybe they played tractor softball with it and they were cleats for running the bases.

one rear tire is a Firestone, the other is an Armstrong.

both front tires are new, and are Akteck (spelling?)

I would do that in a minute IF I knew I would not puncture a tire. Believe me If I had the money to develop a way to have replacable hardened tool steel inserts or carbide studs in tractor tires I would start a company that retrofited it. Getting a tractor stuck on gravel/dirt/black top when it is icy sucks big time. In fact I have actually thought of screwing in small lag bolts on my Polaris 4 wheeler knoby tires. (for pushing snow)

Ice use. Studs put in by tire specialist outfit probably for a winter working tractor with a plow or blower to clear roads, or a farmer who had icy ground to drive on. If you want your own studded tires check with a snowbelt tire supplier for who can put the studs in. RN.

I put studs in a set of new snow tires back in the 1970's for my wife who was taking our daughter
to high school. They didn't close the schools like they do now. She was amazed by the traction on ice. She said cars were stuck on hills and just spinning. She just pulled around them to get out of the way. The state of MD outlawed those studs in the late 70's. The post office trucks are still using them.

In 1980 I bought a used Mercury Bobcat that came out of WVA and it had studs. I had to remove the studs in order to get the car state inspected. Hal

For the ones wanting ice studs just use a #10x 1/2" SM screw in the high rubber lugs. This works well on ice.

I bought a 86’ 3910 a couple of months ago. It’s my second tractor and like it so far.
I see you have square fenders and no ROP or brush guard as mine does. Anyone know what’s up with that? Also your front tires look mighty big to me. Is it 4WD?

I don"t know why it doesn"t have a ROPS doesn"t appear to of ever had one. the front tires are over sized why? I don"t know either. They are brand new, and that is all that matters, I assume they were studded too.

It"s a 2WD with 810 hrs on the clock. It is acually a 1984 built Aug. 22 B shift. Romeo, MI

810 hours is a nice low number. Mine had 1500. Your front tires look huge next to mine.
Maybe I need to put on "dubs" LOL.

Somebody took the ROPS off... and the Flat tops will fit directly on that tractor anyway. The 4610's and up all used them. The 3910 has the same back end, so they fit; it's jsut that they wern't used normally due to the smaller tire size. I think the flat top is really a lot on that size tractor, but they are nice for having the outboard lights... or I should say nice in some respects. Bad for bugs and hard to keep working...
